Why EMDR for Military and Veteran Trauma?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the trauma-focused psychotherapies recommended in the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for PTSD (VA/DoD, 2023) and recognized by the World Health Organization as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress (WHO, 2013). Unlike approaches that require retelling the story in detail session after session, EMDR works with how traumatic memory is stored in the brain and body, which many service members and veterans find more tolerable than repeated verbal recounting.

Military trauma is rarely one clean event. It can be a combat deployment, a training accident, a loss in the unit, military sexual trauma, or years of accumulated exposure. It can also be what clinicians call moral injury: carrying actions witnessed or taken that conflict with your own values. EMDR targets the specific memories and beliefs that keep the nervous system on watch, so that what happened can finally be filed as past instead of relived as present.
